Introduction

Muamko Mpya, a Swahili phrase meaning “A New Dawn,” is a membership-based Community Based Organization operating in Lamu County, on the North Coast of Kenya. The organization was registered in 2016 under the Ministry of Gender, Culture and Social Services (Registration No. CSD/HDM/LMU/C.B.O/VOL II/126). Muamko Mpya was established to respond to the unique health, human rights, and socio-economic challenges faced by Transgender Sex Workers.

Target Population

Muamko Mpya exclusively serves Transgender Sex Workers, a community that continues to face systemic discrimination, criminalization, violence, and limited access to essential services.

Vision

To reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS, promote human rights, increase awareness, and ensure equal treatment and dignity for Transgender Sex Workers.

Mission

To amplify the voices of Transgender Sex Workers by promoting equal access to justice, healthcare, economic empowerment, and good governance through information dissemination, technical support, and community-led advocacy.

Objectives

  • Advocate for the repeal of punitive laws that impede sex workers’ rights
  • Provide access to paralegal services, mediation, dispute resolution, and legal representation
  • Promote access to responsive, quality healthcare services and accurate health information
  • Strengthen sex work activism through community-based approaches and capacity building
  • Establish multi-stakeholder violence response mechanisms to enhance safety and security

Geographical Coverage

Lamu County, Kilifi County, and Mombasa County

Governance and Management

Muamko Mpya is governed by a Board of Managers comprising a Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, and two Board Members. The Board Secretary leads the Secretariat and oversees day-to-day organizational operations.
