This week, the African Sex Workers Alliance (ASWA) successfully concluded a three-day regional training in Rwanda bringing together sex worker leaders and organizations from across Francophone Africa. The training focused on building resilience, strengthening leadership, and advancing human rights and SRHR advocacy within sex worker communities.
A key highlight of the training was the introduction of the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) principles, an approach that emphasizes community strengths and assets rather than focusing on needs and deficits. Through interactive sessions, participants learned how to identify and leverage their own skills, knowledge, and resources to drive change within their communities.
“Every individual has something to offer, and communities know themselves best,” emphasized ASWA during the sessions, underlining the power of collective action and community-led solutions.
The training also provided a space for sex worker leaders to exchange experiences, share strategies for mobilization, and strengthen regional solidarity. It reaffirmed ASWA’s commitment to ensuring that sex workers’ voices are amplified and their rights respected across Africa, particularly in the context of shrinking civic space and funding challenges.
ASWA extends special thanks to our donors for their unwavering support, which made this training possible and impactful.
